You'd never be caught stuffing yourself with junk food! No, not you. But, you do tend to dine out a lot - at sophisticated hangouts mind you. Your business and social life demands it. Besides, it's convenient.
And, the results?
All that food eaten away from home has added saturated fat and calories, taxing your body silently. Restaurant food typically is more calorie dense i.e., it has more calories per bite.
You know you tend to overindulge when you dine out, compared to when you're at home. Impressions count socially. And, your emotions demand satisfaction.
Food isn't particularly expensive for most restaurants, so they serve you what you've come to expect — LOTS OF IT! And of course, you tend to eat more when served larger portions.
If you're a road warrior, or aren't prone to brown-bag it for lunch you likely visit your
local deli or pizza parlor. You'll notice the size of sandwiches and pizzas are huge. Some pizzas come with stuffed crusts, adding an extra 120 calories per slice. And the heroes and hoagies - well, many delis make sandwiches with 6 oz of meat or more. At home, you'd use 3 - 4 oz. Breakfast on the run adds up like you wouldn't believe! The average bagel in New York City is anywhere from4 - 6 oz, that's the same as 4 to 6 slices of white bread. Add a "shmear" of cream cheese and grab a carton of juice, and you just had a breakfast of 750 - 900 calories. Who knew?
Have you been poisoning yourself?
Additives. Sodium and other food additives are likely in some of your restaurant favorites. Salt certainly brings out the flavor in a meal, but in excess can also bring out undesirable health problems. Then there are food colorings used in gourmet establishments and others besides.
Allergens. You know that chronic sinus problem you have? How about that persistent migraine? Skin rashes are a bitch. Acid Reflux and you haven't been able to part ways for a very long time, either.
You're not averse to healthy eating. You understand the benefits of a 'greener' lifestyle. Intellectually. You've even been spotted at a Natural Food Store or the more fashionable Whole Foods Market.
